When planning your wall panelling project, it’s important to get the most from your materials. With Duma Tiles, you can easily reduce waste and achieve a balanced, professional look by using smaller cut pieces of tile on the ends of your wall.
This simple technique not only helps you save tiles but also ensures your installation looks symmetrical and well-finished. Here’s how to plan, measure, and install smaller cut pieces for the perfect fit.
Step 1: Choose Your Tile Layout
Before you start cutting or gluing, decide what type of layout you want to use. Duma Tiles can be installed in several patterns, including subway (brick-style), stacked horizontally, or stacked vertically.
Once you’ve chosen your design, make sure that your full tile pieces are centred on the wall. This creates a balanced, professional look, leaving smaller cut pieces to be used at the sides where they’ll be less noticeable.
Step 2: Prepare the First Row
For installations above a bath or shower tray, it’s crucial that the first row of tiles sits flush with the tub or base. To achieve this, you’ll need to trim off the flange (the raised lip) on the bottom edge of the first course of tiles. This allows the panels to sit tightly against the tub for a watertight finish.
Use a sharp utility knife or fine-tooth saw to trim the edge neatly, and check that the tiles align evenly along the surface before proceeding.
Step 3: Measure and Cut the Smaller Pieces

After confirming your full tiles are centred, measure the remaining space on each side of the wall to determine the size of the smaller end pieces. Remember to account for the interlocking tongue-and-groove system, which slightly affects how the tiles fit together.
Once you’ve marked the measurements, score and snap the tiles using a utility knife, or use a power saw if you prefer. Always cut carefully to maintain a clean edge, and double-check your measurements before cutting to avoid waste.
Step 4: Dry Fit Before Installing
Arrange the first row of tiles from left to right, starting with your smaller cut piece. Dry fit the tiles along the wall to ensure everything lines up correctly. This helps confirm that your layout is level and the tiles interlock smoothly before you begin applying adhesive.
Make any necessary adjustments now, as it’s much easier to correct fitment issues before the tiles are glued.
Step 5: Apply Adhesive and Install
Once you’re happy with the dry fit, clean the back of each Duma Tile with a cloth to remove dust or debris. Apply a 6mm (quarter-inch) bead of adhesive around the perimeter of the tile, then fill in the centre with an “M” or zigzag pattern.
Press the first tile into the wall, carefully working it into the corner trim and sliding it into position. Continue installing the remaining tiles across the row using the same technique. Ensure each tile interlocks securely and sits level before moving on to the next.
Step 6: Enjoy a Professional, Waste-Free Finish

By centring your full tiles and using smaller cut pieces at the edges, you’ll achieve a clean, symmetrical finish while minimising material waste. This efficient approach helps you get more value from your Duma Tiles while ensuring a polished, professional result.
