How to Finish Tile Edges with Duma L-Trim

When completing a wall panelling project, clean and professional edges make all the difference. To achieve that perfect finish, Duma Tiles offers a range of trims designed to complement every style and application. One of the most popular options is the Duma L-Trim, an easy-to-use finishing trim that gives your project a neat and polished edge.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to use the Duma L-Trim to complete the edge of your tiling installation for a smooth, professional result.

What Is a Duma L-Trim?

The L-Trim is one of three matching trim types available for Duma Tiles, along with the J-Trim and Inside Corner Trim. The L-Trim is specifically designed to finish off exposed edges, such as where your new tiles meet an existing wall, or when your installation ends without continuing around a corner.

Shaped like the letter “L”, the trim features one longer edge and one shorter edge. This simple design allows it to cover the exposed sides of both the existing wall and the newly installed Duma Tiles, hiding any rough or uneven edges for a seamless appearance.

When to Use an L-Trim

The L-Trim is ideal in situations where you’re installing Duma Tiles over existing wall tiles or other surfaces that you don’t plan to remove. For example, if you’re updating a splashback or wall section but leaving old tiles in place, the L-Trim neatly bridges the gap between the old and new materials.

It can also be used wherever the edge of your tile installation is visible, providing a tidy, finished look and protecting the edges from wear and moisture.

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Trim

Begin by measuring the length of the edge you want to finish. Mark your Duma L-Trim accordingly and cut it to the correct size using a fine-tooth saw, utility knife, or mitre saw for precise results.

Always double-check your measurement before cutting to ensure the trim aligns perfectly with the tiled section.

Step 2: Apply Adhesive and Sealant

Once your trim is cut to length, apply a thin bead of adhesive to the side of the trim that will contact the wall (the substrate side). Then, apply a thin bead of clear silicone sealant along the side that will sit against the Duma Tiles.

This combination of adhesive and sealant ensures both a secure bond and a watertight finish.

Step 3: Position the L-Trim

Carefully press the Duma L-Trim into place along the edge of your installation. Make sure it sits flush against both surfaces – the existing wall or tile and the new Duma Tile section. Adjust it as needed before the adhesive begins to set.

If the trim doesn’t stay in position immediately, use masking tape or painter’s tape to hold it in place while the adhesive dries. Leave it for the recommended drying time, usually around 24 hours, to allow the adhesive to cure fully.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once the adhesive has dried, remove any tape and inspect the trim to ensure it’s firmly secured and aligned correctly. Wipe away any excess sealant with a damp cloth for a clean, smooth finish.

The result is a crisp, professional edge that enhances the appearance of your wall panels while protecting them from moisture and everyday wear.

A Simple, Stylish Way to Complete Your Project

Using the Duma L-Trim is a quick and effective way to finish your Duma Tiles installation. It not only improves the overall look of your project but also extends the durability of your wall panels by sealing and protecting exposed edges.
