How to Cut Around Shower Heads and Faucets with Duma Tiles

When installing wall panels in your bathroom, one of the most common challenges is cutting around shower heads, taps, and other plumbing fixtures. With Duma Tiles, this task is surprisingly easy. These waterproof, interlocking tiles are designed for simple DIY installation, allowing you to achieve a professional-looking finish without the mess of grout or mortar.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to accurately measure, cut, and fit Duma Tiles around pipes and fittings to create a clean, watertight result.

Step 1: Measure Precisely

Start by measuring the distance from the edge of your tile track to the centre of the pipe or fixture. For example, if the centre of the pipe is 13 inches from the track, make a note of that number. Next, measure from the bottom of the wall to the centre of the same pipe. In our example, the measurement is six and three-eighths inches.

It’s important to measure to the centre point, not the edge of the pipe, to ensure the opening will fit perfectly once the tile is installed. Always double-check your measurements before transferring them to the tile.

Step 2: Mark the Tile

Transfer your measurements onto the Duma Tile. From the edge of the tile, measure in the same distance you recorded earlier – in this case, 13 inches – and make a small mark. Then measure up from the bottom edge the second measurement, six and three-eighths inches, and make another mark. Where these two lines intersect will be the centre of your hole.

Use a square or straight edge to make sure your lines are perfectly aligned. Accuracy at this stage will help ensure a clean, professional cut.

Step 3: Cut the Hole

Once you’ve marked the tile, it’s time to cut the opening for your pipe or fixture. The easiest way to do this is with a hole saw attachment or a jigsaw fitted with a fine-tooth blade suitable for cutting PVC or composite materials. If using power tools, always wear safety glasses and handle the tile carefully to avoid chipping the edges.

Cut slowly and steadily, allowing the blade to do the work. After cutting, check the hole to ensure it matches the pipe or fitting snugly.

Step 4: Clean and Prepare

After cutting the tile, remove any dust or debris from the surface. A quick wipe with a damp cloth is usually enough. Ensuring the tile is clean before applying adhesive will help achieve a strong bond and prevent issues later on.

Step 5: Apply Adhesive and Install

Apply adhesive to the back of the Duma Tile in a 6mm bead pattern around the perimeter, filling the centre with an “M” or zigzag shape. Position the tile carefully, pressing it into place so it locks seamlessly with the surrounding tiles.

Step 6: Seal the Joints

Whenever you’re working in a wet environment, such as a shower, bath, or around taps, sealing is absolutely essential. Apply a thin bead of clear silicone sealant to all tongue-and-groove joints between the tiles, as well as around the edges of pipes and fittings.

This step prevents water from getting behind the tiles and ensures a long-lasting, watertight finish. Smooth the sealant with a damp cloth or your finger for a neat appearance, and wipe away any excess before it dries.

A Clean, Professional Finish

Cutting around shower heads and faucets might seem intimidating, but with Duma Tiles it’s quick, clean, and easy. The interlocking design makes every installation simple, while the waterproof surface ensures your bathroom remains stylish and practical for years to come.
