The first tile in a Duma Tiles installation sets the foundation for your entire project. Proper placement ensures a level, professional finish, whether you are working on a wall, floor, or existing tiled surface.
Step 1: Determine Tile Orientation
Before starting, decide whether your tiles will be placed vertically or horizontally. Your starting point and tile layout (stacked bond or running bond) depend on the project and the surface type—drywall, OSB, plywood, or existing tiles.
Step 2: Prepare the First Row
For projects starting on the floor, ensure the first row is straight and level. Trim off the bottom flange of all tiles in the first course so they sit flush against the surface. This creates a smooth and even starting point.
Step 3: Position the First Panel

Begin installation from the bottom row, working from left to right. Due to the interlocking tongue-and-groove profile of Duma Tiles, ensure that the first panel fits properly and is level before applying adhesive.
Step 4: Apply Adhesive
Before adhering the tile, clean the back of the panel to remove any dust or debris. Apply a ¼ inch bead of adhesive around the perimeter, then fill in the middle using an M or W pattern. Press the panel firmly into place on the substrate.
Step 5: Clean Excess Adhesive

Wipe away any excess adhesive using a damp cloth before it dries. This ensures a neat finish and avoids adhesive seeping into the interlocking joints.
By following these steps, your first Duma Tile panel will provide a solid, level foundation for the rest of your installation, making the process smoother and the finished project more professional.
